My love for Center Stage…and a few other things

Today is release day for Center Stage, the first book of my new Magnolia Steele Mystery series. iBooks Amazon Kobo Nook Google Play Goodreads I love this book, but I REALLY love this character. Magnolia quickly wormed her way into my heart. The story is set in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. I lived there for three years and I absolutely loved it there. Beautiful landscape and some of the genuinely nicest people I’ve ever met. While Franklin is a lot more sophisticated than Henryetta, Arkansas, the fictional town that is the setting for my Rose Gardner Mystery series, it still has a lot of heart. It’s definitely one of my favorite places. Still,  those of you who read my books know it’s all about the characters for me. Magnolia easily ranks as one of my favorites, but this book is packed with other characters who  have captured my heart. There were two surprise characters–neither of them in my rough synopsis for the book–but once they landed on the page (or my computer screen, as the case may be) I KNEW they had to stay. I quickly worked things around to make them fit seamlessly into the overall story […]

A Business Plan for Indie Authors–Part Three

****This post was originally published on The Writer’s Guide to ePublishing on October 7, 2012**** This is the third part of a three part series on MY business plan as a self-published author. Just remember, what works for me, or is important to me, may not work for you. My hope is if you are a self-published author, this will make you think more about the business part of your career. The first part covers the Table of contents, the business description, and the business ownership and location. Go here to read Part One. Part Two covers what my products are, my pricing strategy, and my financial plan. **** 6. Production Schedule and Writing Plans I’ve already mentioned that I think it’s important to schedule the writing and release of my books. I schedule my developmental and copy editors months in advance and I base those dates off of my production schedule.  Otherwise it would be a guessing game.  As of September, I have my developmental editor booked out to September 2013. In my business plan, I listed every book I planned to write, and the schedule I planned to follow. Production Schedule Sacrifice: Developmental edits return on Wednesday, January 4 […]

A Business Plan for Indie Authors–Part One

****This post was originally published on The Writer’s Guide to ePublishing on October 5, 2012**** This is the first part of a three part series on MY business plan as a self-published author. So many people have heard about my twenty-three page business plan and 1) wondered how I found enough material to fill twenty-three pages 2) heard I wrote a twenty-three page business plan and were too intimidated to try it or 3) both. Just remember, what works for me or is important to me may not work for you. My hope is if you are a self-published author, this will make you think more about the business part of your career. **** When I self-published my first book in July of 2011, my goal was to sell 1000 books by December 31. Six months. At the time, it seemed like a pie-in-the-sky dream. I’d done my research and everything I found said self-publishing was a long tail venture. You start off slow and steadily build your sales—and your readers. Estimates for a first month’s expected sales were around 20-50 books. If I was lucky. And then hopefully, double sales the second month. What I didn’t count on were the benefits […]

Rose Gardner Mystery Series End Coming May 2016

A couple of weeks ago I hosted a two hour Facebook Q&A event about the Rose Gardner Mystery series. Toward the end of my two hours, I made a announcement that shocked many of my readers. Thirty-Six and a Half Motives will be the last Rose Gardner Mystery.  This decision wasn’t made lightly, and honestly, I feel a little sick typing that. I love Rose but the outcry from many readers is that they want an end. I’ve stated before that Thirty-Six would resolve many of the outstanding questions as well as wrap up the J.R. arc. But after many, many months of discussion with my editor (honestly, since January, 2015) I’ve decided that it might be best to end the series. HOWEVER… …that won’t be the end of Rose. When my editor and I began to discuss an ending to the series, we also discussed what would become of Rose. I’m lucky that Angela loves Rose as much as I do and neither of us are ready to say goodbye to her just yet. Hopefully, a lot of readers feel the same way. So in late 2016, I’ll release the first book of a new series with Rose and […]

Preorder: iBooks Amazon US Amazon UK Nook Kobo Google Play  Goodreads Chapter One   No one had ever accused Libby St. Clair of being a practical woman. Not that she cared. The practical choice was often the safe one, the boring one. Libby St. Clair had also never been accused of being boring. She firmly believed in living life to the fullest. Ironically enough, the fact that she was now preparing to walk down the aisle toward a man she didn’t intend to marry was the first practical choice she’d consciously made, even if no one else realized it. Especially her two best friends. “Libby,” Megan gushed, staring at Libby’s reflection in the mirror. “You look gorgeous.” Blair gave her a warm smile. “She’s right, Libs. You’re stunning.” “And just think,” Megan said, fluffing Libby’s tulle gown. “Not a single mishap.” That was the part that shook Libby’s faith in her plan. Why was her wedding going so perfectly? Blair put her hand on Libby’s arm and stared into her eyes in the reflection. “I confess, when you called last month and […]

Thirty-Four and a Half Predicaments Bonus Scenes

Many, many readers have asked me to write a novella between Thirty-Four and a Half Predicaments and Thirty-Five and a Half Conspiracies, and I’ve said no. There will be no novella. But… That doesn’t mean there can’t be bonus scenes. Over the summer, and maybe into the fall until the release of Thirty-Five in November, I’m going to release what I’m calling “bonus chapters.” These  chapters fall between Thirty-Four and the beginning of Thirty-Five. They will all be strictly other character POVs. There might be one chapter. There might be two. I’m writing them as they fit into my crazy summer schedule. I’ve written the first two chapters and I’m releasing them on Tuesday, June 2. Here’s a hint: The first chapter is from Mason’s POV. How can you read them? Sign up for my newsletter. Like the previous novellas, I’ll post links and passwords to the chapters. I’ll be sending out several newsletters between now and November 3, so you’ll have to read the emails and see if the links and passwords are inside. Hint: These chapters are bonus, so they will not be leading my newsletters. The newsletters will be sent out for other reasons so the  link and […]
